Dodd Civil provided all the Civil Engineering design, specification and consenting services for the construction of a new $8.6M public (year 1 to 13) school in Kaitaia. These services included helping to prepare the resource consent application and the relevant building consent applications.
THE PROJECT
Initial site survey and investigations
Assisting with the preparation of the outline plan of works application
Preparing design drawings and specifications for tendering, consenting and construction
Involvement in gaining certified completion
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS The project had a short design and build development period of approximately 18 months with a targeted date for completion at the beginning of the 2013 school year. Being in Kaitaia, there were limited local resources available which made time management and clear communication critical to efficiency.
Other challenges included:
Bulk earthworks and building construction during unseasonably wet conditions
Heavy vegetation
On-site stormwater management in accordance with the
Council’s requirements
Wastewater disposal options appraisal
The project was designed and constructed to achieve a 5 Star “Green Star” rating for environmental acceptability which, from a Civil Engineering perspective, included:
Minimisation of works
Balanced earthworks
The use of specific materials
Rain water reuse
Waste material control
The project was completed on time and achieved its 5 Star “Green Star” rating. We met all challenges and continue to be engaged by the same client to provide Civil Engineering consultancy services on similar projects for the Ministry of Education.
